Part Identification Guide

We need high quality images shot in FOCUS with EXCELLENT lighting and the male blade width of a terminal to identify a connector.  Usually we want to see the harness side plug connector straight on, at an iso angle, and a side angle.

We get a LOT of out of focus images with poor lighting that don’t help us identify parts, delaying or halting identification.

We receive hundreds of requests to identify specific parts for automobiles, motorcycles, industrial applications and agricultural applications daily. While we do have expertise in identifying and sourcing parts for our customers, most of the requests we receive don’t have the information we need for identification and sourcing.

What information do we need?
1. How many pieces are you looking for? What is the estimated annual usage?
2. Do you need ancillary components like terminals, seals, etc?
3. How quickly do you need the part(s)?
4. What is the year, make, model, engine & transmission the part comes from.
5. What does the part do and/or what does it connect to?
6. What is the part number? If no part number, please mention any numbers on the part and any symbols (often manufacturer symbols).
7. Provide well lit, in focus images! Please see our photo submission guide here.
8. Scaling information. Is the part 1 cm or 1m in length? With terminals, what is the outer diameter of the circular terminal or blade width of the male terminal? What wire size and outer diameter do you plan to use?
9. Please use a descriptive title in the subject line of your email.

Due to the large volume or requests we receive, we are not able to answer every single request despite working extended hours to try and meet our customers needs. The higher the quality of the information you provide, the better able we are to deliver an expedient and helpful response.

Connector Photo Submission Guide

February 11th, 2010

We receive a very large number of images from customers trying to identify various parts. Often these are small parts and often they are terminals or connectors. Many of these images are out of focus and / or have poor lighting such that we have to ask for improved images. This is often frustrating for customers because the parts are often not easy to access and taking photographs of small items can be difficult without experience.

The quickest way to explain this issue is to say that yes, your inexpensive $100 point and shoot digital camera can take an excellent shot of a part for us to identify. It is not about how much you spend but rather about the technique. A good photographer can take amazing shots on a disposable camera.

Here are our basic steps to take a high quality image on a digital camera:

1. Focus – Set the camera to macro mode (often a flower button) setting.
2. Focus – If the camera won’t focus on the object but chooses objects nearby, change the camera focus setting to center point focus rather than averaged or automatic focus. Then place the part in the center of the field of view.
3. Focus – If you still have trouble after step #1 & 2, you are probably too close to the object. Move the camera away from the object 1 to 3 feet (0.3 to 0.9 m) and crop the image after the picture is downloaded.
4. Some cameras will bounce between chosen focus zones. Steps #1 – 3 above typically help but if they do not solve the problem, keep letting the camera choose zones until you get the desired one. Try different angles, distances, etc.
5. Lighting – Use LOTS of flood or ambient general lighting for your shot and use spot lighting on internal part features. A flashlight is a great tool in a confined space.

The important issues here are focus, focus, focus, focus and lighting. Please send images that are in focus and do not send images that are out of focus. This may seem obvious but we receive MANY images that are out of focus while requiring recognition of small detailed features that are difficult to discern even with a good image.

Terminal Crimp Validation Charts

December 18th, 2009

One of our most common customer questions centers around terminal crimp quality and validation. For this reason, we have decided to post a chart provided by Tyco Electronics in a few different formats.

For professional shops, we recommend downloading the highest quality and printing the guide on legal or larger paper for shop reference. For individuals, we have smaller versions available and you can simply reference the images or pdfs.

New High Flow Injectors from Siemens (80lb/hr and 212lb/hr Deka IV)

March 6th, 2009

Customers have been asking for an injector just like our very popular Siemens Deka IV 60 lb/hr Injectors but with a higher flow rate and now we have a solution! Ballenger Motorsports is now proud to be offering the same Siemens Deka IV injectors in an 80 lbs/hr flow rate. These are not modified or custom but are Genuine Siemens Deka IV products which we are able to offer in a Siemens Deka IV 80lb/hr EV1 Connector variation (click here) or a Siemens Deka IV 80lb/hr EV6 USCAR Connector Variation (click here). As we stock both versions you won’t need to buy any expensive injector adapters or re-wire your existing harness, just buy the one that fits your existing harness.

Many customers will already recognize that the 60 lb/hr version of these injectors are hugely popular for their ability to handle higher pressure and higher flow rates under extreme conditions such as turbocharged and supercharged applications. Other customers might recognize them for their ability to handle flex fuel such as ethanol while delivering excellent atomization, extremely quick opening times and superb idle quality while concurrently delivering high flow and working with existing oem high impedance drivers. Our new 80 lb/hour version maintains the same properties that have given the 60 lb/hour injectors such a good reputation while increasing flow by 33%.

The domestic market can buy the Siemens Deka IV 80lb/hr EV1 Connector version for the LS1, LT1, LT4, TBI, TPI, some LS2, some LS6 and many other European and domestic vehicles while the Siemens Deka IV 80lb/hr EV6 USCAR Connector version satisfies the LS3, LS7, some LS2 and most new Ford, GM, and Chrysler applications as well as many import applications. Many Japanese import performance tuners may recognize that these fit in existing packaging without any special adapters or modifications as the popular EV-14 injectors require.

Ballenger Motorsports is also proud to announce the availability of the much demanded 212lb/hour Siemens injectors (click here). Specifically intended for flex fuels and superb flow rates, these low impedance injectors open fast! These injectors can be installed in the same package size as the popular Siemens 60lb/hr and 80lb/hr injectors so installations in many oem applications is a direct fit. These injectors will also make it easy to go with a single rail or to reduce from 3 rails to 2 rails in extreme horsepower applications. These injectors are Genuine Siemens and from a brand new build with the most current technology available and are perfectly suited to the high performance market.

Injector Connectors and Mates plus adapter harnesses

October 11, 2008

Due to overwhelming demand, we have chosen to make a separate section just for injector connectors, adapters and mates here:

Injector Connectors, mates and adapters

We have seen a LOT of companies selling adapters on the internet for a range of prices. Some of the companies actually stole our images before we began to watermark all of our photos.

We often consult with customers who have gone to other companies looking for the mates and are looking for an inexpensive mating solution. We find that, at the moment, there are few solutions meeting oem standards and specifications. Most solutions on the market utilize poorly designed, unsealed mates that do not meet oem specifications and whose tolerances are unacceptable.

Our customers sometimes ask; “so what it’s just a connector what can go wrong?” Keep in mind that these humble connectors are for the fuel injectors on vehicle applications and they MUST be sealed. A problematic or intermittent connection to the vehicles fuel injectors can lead to complete engine failure. An unsealed, poorly made terminal can corrode in months and cause a product failure in a very short period of time. Wiring problems such as an intermittent connection are one of the hardest issues to troubleshoot. Even with solutions that have been sealed but poorly toleranced or poorly manufactured, the spring elements may only make partial contact and wear prematurely. Once again, this can happen in a short period of time and lead you on a wild chase for the problem before you realize it occurred because of an inexpensive part.

If you don’t see your application listed, please contact us as our engineering staff has extensive experience in plastic and connector design and is able to manufacture components meeting or exceeding full OEM specifications.

NGK Powerdex AFX – Troubleshooting Guide added to our FAQs section

August 18, 2008

Ballenger Motorsports has helped our customers individually with common problems relating to the NGK Powerdex AFX for some time now. We have finally decided to put up our simple troubleshooting & diagnostic guide that solves the problem in approximately 95% of the cases we have run into.

NGK Powerdex AFX Troubleshooting & Diagnostic Guide

We also plan to add a step by step set of images and explanation about how to remove the terminals from the the large gray connector that goes to the NTK or Bosch Sensor itself. We have found a few customers who, rather than remove the terminals and run the wiring through the firewall then repopulate the connector with the terminals, instead choose to CUT the wires to the connector. This is not a good solution and we have seen numerous faults as a result. REMOVING the terminals and putting them back when done routing the wiring is MUCH easier than cutting the teflon wires. Look for that addition within a few days.
